Ambient DVD
Sarah mentioned the other day that it would be nice to have a seasonally appropriate ambient DVD for the cohen center. Any Ideas? I was thinking that it might be cool if we recorded a few hours of a tidal cycle. It could be an interesting conversation starter with the teachers without being distracting to the kids! Your tidal cycle idea got me thinking that it would be fun to have footage from Fundy of the tide changing, because you can really watch it move. then I was thinking it would be neat to have Fundy footage to compare with Portland. Then I started wondering if a model of changing sea surface height exits that would show the tidal change for the whole Gulf. I think such a thing exists, Andy would probably know for sure. It might not be very peaceful - it would probably be in a crazy rainbow of colors - but it would be a good conversation starter with teachers. Andy might now of other model output/ animations that would be equally or more interesting. just another thought.
One other thought - what about using Nick's "animations" of tidal movement in the harbor? the ones he made stitching together still images taken from the third floor and rotating them? They are sort of abstract and cool...
just another free idea... (in other words, a change of video without having to pay for someone to record new footage).

Alan took the video that's currently on the big screens. It was VERY cold that day (5°F?)
Anyone is welcome to the HDV cam for ambient video. Something contextual but repetitive would be helpful to keep kids focused on the task at hand as well as for creating a loop.
Some ideas: Flock or nesting seagulls, swimming copepods, GOM flyover from shuttle...
